Southern Makers Coming to Sloss Furnaces

A couple of weeks ago we braved freezing temperatures, torrential downpours and pelting sleet while traveling south to Sloss Furnaces to make a BIG announcement… Southern Makers has added a second show! Mark your calendars. September 10 – 11, Southern Makers will be at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama.

Last Thursday, the Alabama Tourism Department held a press conference unveiling their theme for 2016. This year is proclaimed as “The Year of Alabama Makers”!! The theme was based off the Southern Makers event that has placed innovation, creativity, and passion to the forefront for ALL Alabama Makers since it’s inception in 2013. We were thrilled to join Lee Sentell, the State of Alabama Tourism department director, and Leigh Sloss-Corra representing the Pepper Place Market, for the press conference, which took place at the historic Sloss Furnaces.

Also, in conjunction with this year’s state theme, the Market at Pepper Place in Birmingham will host a Makers’ Village each Saturday morning during the months of June, July and August. The Makers’ Village will be set up in the parking lot of chef Chris Hastings’ new OvenBird restaurant and will feature a variety of merchandise from Alabama artisans and craftspeople, many of whom will also be participating in the Southern Makers event.

Not familiar with Southern Makers…

Southern Makers is a two-day event that celebrates and cultivates Southern creativity and innovation by bringing together highly curated, handpicked top talent that “make”…music, designs, buildings, farms, art, food, beer, clothing, soap, coffee, and tea – essentially the top makers in their respective trades. Ranging from experts in Architecture to art, fashion, food, repurposing, and everything in between, the event explores southern based creativity that enriches lives.

This is an event that is created for makers (and enthusiasts), by makers as a platform to come together in one central location to network, learn, inspire and cultivate the southern soul that keeps Alabama and Southern Makers unique and special.

American Pickers Meets Southern Accents

Ever so often we are presented with an opportunity that is simply too hard to pass up. This past fall Mike Wolfe of American Pickers and his lovely wife Jodi visited our showroom. As is the case with so many of our customers who hold a deep appreciation and respect for things of old, we immediately connected with Mike. Mike and Jodi toured our main showroom and then traveled a short distance down the road to our salvaged wood showroom. Mike carefully selected salvaged lumber from several stacks for a specific project that he had in mind. Several weeks later we found ourselves on the top of a mountain in Tennessee, salvaged wood in hand, ready to tackle Mike’s project.

A work in progress!!

If you are a fan of American Pickers, you probably know that Mike has an impressive collection of antique motorcycles. Mike built a large garage to house his motorcycle collection. In one corner of the garage he included an office. Mike wanted to create an atmosphere for his office that matched the look and feel of his collection.

Working with the salvaged wood that Mike hand picked, we covered the interior back wall of the office with re-milled quarter sawn white oak. The ceiling was dressed with antique beadboard and the floor was a mixture of stained and painted white oak. The exterior wall of the office was wrapped with reclaimed lumber in a kaleidoscope of gorgeous colors. Once installed, the wood was finished with two coats of linseed oil.

We loved working with Mike on his project. Upon completion, Mike took one look and declared that his new office was “sexy”! We’ll take that compliment!!
