Famous Doors

A few months ago we were contacted by our good friend, Rick Morgan. Rick is a contractor in Nashville who was doing some work for a new saloon just off Broadway on 2nd Ave North. The new saloon, Famous, which celebrated it’s grand opening this past November, is situated between Hard Rock Cafe and the Wildhorse Saloon.

Acquiring new doors for Famous Saloon was no easy task. Rick was working under very strict guidelines by the Nashville Historical Society which required him to replicate, as closely as possible, the doors that were originally present on the Second Ave block. This meant that 3 sets of doors, close to 12 feet in height each, were needed for the entry. Rick realized that the only solution to finding doors the size and style needed was to have them custom made. Knowing that Southern Accents could handle the job, Rick gave us a call!

After a bit of discussion with our wood workers, Josh and Roger, we accepted the challenge. Shortly after, work began on what is currently the largest set of doors that we have ever built. At 12 feet, not only are these doors exceptionally tall, they are extremely heavy. So heavy in fact, that our guys had to transport the 6 doors individually and had to set them in the frames on site! In addition to the exterior doors, we also built an unusual set of interior doors and provided material for the bar.

In speaking with Rick about the Famous doors he said, “The SA team knocked this one out of the park! The doors turned out better than I ever expected. Everyone here is beyond thrilled!” The next time you are in Nashville, stop by the Famous Saloon on 2nd Ave and enjoy the awesome atmosphere combined with great food and entertainment. And don’t forget to tell them that Southern Accents sent you!

The Westin Hotel – Nashville

A growing area of Southern Accents business the past few years has been set design and staging. We’ve designed and built sets for some amazing venues: New York Fashion week, SlossFest, Yellowhammer Presidential Forum, Southern Makers and more. While we are best known for our use of reclaimed wood and salvaged materials, our latest project pushed our creativity to new and exciting heights!! Last week we completed a job for the new Westin Hotel in downtown Nashville just in time for their grand opening. While this job presented many challenges, we overcame each one with the end result being nothing short of spectacular!

Through relationships with quality people like Brent Smith, and others, we found ourselves in contact with the owners of the Westin Hotel who were looking for someone to construct the decor for two lobby ceilings. Jason West, of David Mexico Design Group out of NYC, came up with a beautiful multi faceted ceiling design. Jason’s design featured intricate lines and angles that resembled a pyramid. For this project we decided to use a high density urethane foam, which was hand carved to form the various facets. From start to finish, we were given only 31 days to complete the project.

Large blocks of foam were hand carved to create the ceiling decor

Once we received the purchase order, the first step was to acquire the needed material. The foam used for this job had to be custom made. 15 blocks of 4’ x 10’ foam was poured and shipped to our warehouse in Garden City, Alabama. This process took 21 days, leaving us with only 10 days to complete the project! While the empty warehouse provided the large working space needed, there was no electricity, which forced our team to work with the assistance of a generator. SA team member Josh Howe, who has a BFA from the University of Montevallo with a concentration in sculpting, quickly went to work hand sculpting each piece of foam. Once the foam was carved, each piece was covered in a bronzy gold colored vinyl. The pieces were then transported to the Westin where SA team members worked throughout the week and into the wee hours of the night framing and hanging the finished works of art.

We were honored to have been given the opportunity to take on this project. While the challenges we faced pushed us out of our comfort zone, we proved that we can take on any project and rise to the occasion. Like all of our endeavors, this was a team effort. From Jason’s spectacular design, to Josh’s artistry, to those that provided the vinyl application and other tools and equipment needed, everyone involved served an intricate and important role in this creation.

We are excited about the relationships formed during this venture and look forward to working with the Westin again in the future. Located at 807 Clark Place in Nashville, TN, the Westin officially opened Oct 12 and is booked at 100% occupancy this Sunday. When you visit this decadent hotel, remember to look UP at the ceiling while in the elevator lobby of the 1st and 27th floor to view Southern Accents handiwork!

Southern Accents – A Designers Delight!

We love working with designers, especially those who share our passion for salvaging and preserving architectural treasures. We are fortunate to have worked, and continue to work, with some very talented designers, including Samantha Oaks from Nashville, Tennessee. Samantha came to us recently upon the recommendation of her client! She was looking for a set of doors to use at the entrance of a listening room. Not only did Samantha find the perfect set of doors and hardware for this project, she also walked away with a second pair, which she converted to sliding barn doors, as well as an antique mantel for the clients home.

The set of doors that Samantha selected for her client’s listening room was originally covered with several layers of black and white paint. Although the doors were too short for the 9′ opening, Samantha was drawn to the character of the doors and was determined to find a way to make them work. We stripped all the paint from the doors, which revealed the gorgeous wood grain and detailed carving. Samantha came up with the idea to use iron window grates at the top of the doors. Not only did this solution balance the height, but it also allowed light to stream through. Being a big fan of vintage hardware, Samantha chose the fantastic antique handle which added the perfect finishing touch!

When asked what it was about salvaged architectural items that appealed to her as a designer, Samantha replied, “Having migrated from New Orleans to Nashville I’ve always had a vision and affection for architecturally salvaged items. Anything with a story of it’s history that needs a little extra love and a new home fascinates me. I also love looking at an item that can be repurposed into something it was never intended to be or adding an element that makes it shine brighter than it ever had before. I gravitate towards textures and blending them together in a simplistic and sophisticated way.”

Samantha also told us that the use of salvaged architectural items was one of her favorite elements that she often includes in her custom designs. She loves incorporating vintage items into a new construction to create a truly unique space for her clients.
